The Best Restaurants in Downtown Charleston for Celebrating Birthdays

It’s Virgo season and that means lots of folks are celebrating birthdays! That’s right – as it falls nine months after the boozy, party-ful holiday season, September babies make up the most common birthdays of the year. So we’re handing you a list of our favorite Charleston spots to take that special Virgo in your life (even if that’s you) for a memorable bday dinner.

The Ordinary – The high-ceiling dining room of the Ordinary can make even an average weekday night seem like a grand night out, so it’s the perfect place to spoil a bivalve-obsessed Virgo. With dazzling seafood towers, fresh local oysters, gorgeous cocktails and a menu that otherwise shimmers with enticing maritime options, you’ll find yourself shelling out plenty of bucks, but in exchange for a truly celebratory evening.

Shi Ki – A perfect pick for the sushi-loving Virgo, Charleston’s oldest sushi restaurant used their pandemic downtime to give their dining room a full, modern refresh. Tucked away from Charleston’s major dining thoroughfares, Shi Ki remains a decently well-kept secret with a loyal following of longtime locals. But with limited dining space, you’ll still want to make sure you make a reservation!

FIG – The nice thing about birthdays is that they land at the same time every year, which means you have plenty of time to snag a reservation for next year at this notoriously excellent, but difficult-to-book jewel in Charleston’s culinary crown. With a constantly fluctuating menu of seasonal options that would satisfy even the most worldly gourmand, and a wine list that’s landed them a handful of James Beard Awards, this is where you’ll want to book a table for the Virgo with a truly discerning palate. Don’t want to wait for next year? Grab a spot in line before doors open at 5 and pray for some birthday luck!

Chez Nous – This intimate, romantic hideaway feels like you’ve stepped out of Charleston and into a charming French villa, so we recommend it for the Francophile Virgos out there. With a menu that changes daily, (yes, daily – keep an eye on their Instagram for the updated list) and makes exceptional use of seasonal and locally grown produce and protein, Chez Nous brings not only a touch of European class and cooking techniques, but also a delightful element of surprise. Spilt a bottle of wine (or two) to really set off the French vibes, and put your Virgo in the party spirit.

Bistronomy – We love Bistronomy for many reasons; the charming staff, the goat cheese spring rolls… but this attractive Spring Street location also boasts a delightful, vintage-inspired dining room, a fantastic wine list, and a menu with something to please everyone. Definitely our pick for the Virgo with friends in tow, Bistronomy is a great place to bring a group looking to share delicious bites, quaff some tasty vino, and generally feel fancy, without any stuffy vibes.

Historic Supper Club – For the history buff Virgo, this culinary adventure through time is the perfect way to step out of modernity and enjoy a meal out-of-time in our elegant State Street dining room. Your professional tour guide and chef will prepare and serve a multi-course meal representing different eras of Charleston history, all while providing the fascinating context of what was happening in Charleston at the time in which each dish would’ve placed on tables throughout the Lowcountry. This is a small-group event, with the option to be reserved for a private party, making it a truly special experience for anyone with something to celebrate!
